PM Modi inaugurates the first ‘Vertical-Lift Sea’ bridge in Asia at Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu)

Bridge can be pulled up by 22 metres in 5 minutes

Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first ‘Vertical-Lift Sea’ bridge in Asia. The bridge named as ‘Pamban Bridge’ over the sea is 2.08 km. Its foundation was laid by PM Modi in November 2019. This bridge connects Rameswaram (Pamban Island) with Mandapam. The bridge made of stainless steel has been coated with polysilicon to protect it from rusting and saline sea water. The old bridge was closed in June 2022 for safety reasons due to rusting resulting in stoppage of a railway connection between Rameswaram and Mandapam.

What is the function of ‘Vertical-Lift Sea’ bridge

The Vertical-Lift Sea bridge is pulled up when a big ship passes using an electro-mechanical system. It can pull the bridge up by 22 metres in 5 minutes and it will require only one person to handle the job. The old bridge required 14 people to open it for passing of a ship.
