Ratnagiri, Maharashtra – Arjun Chavan (18), a Hindu youth, was beaten up by a religious fanatical vendor on afternoon of April 1st, in Mirkarwada jetty area of Ratnagiri taluka over a trivial issue of buying plastic bags. When Arjun called his brother to help him, the fanatic mob beat up his brother and three other Hindus too who came to help him. Conflicting complaints have been filed in this case in Police station. “Our car has Hindu written on it; that is why we were beaten up,” Arjun and his brother Karan alleged.
1. On the afternoon of April 1st, Arjun Umesh Chavan, who had gone to mirkarwada to buy fish, went to buy a bag from the fanatic vendor. As he did not have any change, he asked the seller for a scanner for Google Pay. When he realised that the scanner was not working, Arjun told the seller, to which the fanatic seller replied arrogantly, ‘Ab mere mukh pe chhap’ (Now scan my face.).
2. Arjun was going to another shop saying, ‘I don’t want your bag’, when the fanatical vendor called him again and started beating him up. This time Arjun called his brother Karan.
3. When Karan and three of them reached there, a crowd of fanatics gathered with the vendors, who beat up Arjun, his brother Karan and their associates.
4. Office-bearers and activists of several Hindu organisations went to the district hospital after the news of injured Arjun’s hospitalisation went viral.
5. The city police have recorded Arjun’s statement in which he said that they are constantly being harassed in Mirkarwada. We are being harassed for writing ‘Hindu’ on our car.
6. A complaint has also been filed by religious fanatics that ‘We only have been beaten up’.
7. “Further investigation will be carried out on the basis of information by eyewitness present at the scene and available evidence.” said City Police Inspector Shivarkar, who appealed to the public to exercise restraint and not believe in rumours.
