Bangladesh Govt’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on a visit to China

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Bangladesh’s interim Govt’s chief advisor, Muhammad Yunus, has travelled to Beijing on a jet sent by China. It is being speculated that Bangladesh is trying to strengthen its ties with China to provoke India.

1. Yunus left for Beijing without staying in Bangladesh on Independence Day. ‘Muhammad Yunus chose China for his first foreign visit, and through this, Bangladesh is sending a certain message’, Mohammad Jashimuddin, a high-ranking official from Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Department, said.

2. China already has trade relations with Bangladesh, and it is likely to make further efforts to strengthen them. Interestingly, since Muhammad Yunus assumed office, at least 14 Chinese enterprises have invested in Bangladesh.

3. China’s increasing investment in Bangladesh could concern India. China’s presence in infrastructure projects in a neighbouring country could pose a challenge for India.

Editorial Perspectives

  • China has invested billions of dollars in the infrastructure of Pakistan and Sri Lanka. When these countries failed to repay the loans, China started exerting significant pressure on them. If the same happens with Bangladesh in the future, it wouldn’t be surprising !
  • In the future, China might use Bangladeshi land for anti-India activities. Considering this, India needs to remain vigilant and prepared for any eventuality.
