Udham Singh Nagar (Uttarakhand) – As part of the BJP government’s crackdown on illegal madarasas in Uttarakhand, 92 madarasas have been closed across the state so far. In the capital Dehradun alone, 52 madarasas have been shut down. Recently, 5 illegal madarasas were closed in Jaspur, 3 in Gadarpur, and 2 in Rudrapur, following a police verification campaign that confirmed their illegal status. Earlier, 9 madarasas were also closed in Khatima. According to government
estimates, there may be around 500 illegal madarasas in the state, with 52 closed in the last 15 days alone.
Muslims have condemned the ongoing action by the administration, arguing that it is unfair to close these madarasas suddenly without any prior notice or opportunity to respond. They fear that the future of thousands of children studying in these madarasas now hangs in the balance. Many also feel that sealing madarasas during the holy month of Ramzan is inappropriate. However, the administration has maintained that the action is being carried out strictly within the framework of the law and in accordance with government directives.
Editorial PerspectiveMadarasas should not exist in this country. Reports of terrorists being found in madarasas, weapons caches being discovered, and incidents of rape and murder have surfaced from time to time. Therefore, the government should stop subsidizing them and shut them down. |
