Ottawa (Canada) – After resigning from his position in January, Canada’s current caretaker Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, will now have to step down, making way for Mark Carney to take over as the new Prime Minister. In the ruling Liberal Party’s internal elections, nearly 152,000 members cast their votes, with Carney securing 86% of the votes. His appointment as Prime Minister will mark the end of Justin Trudeau’s nine-year tenure in Canada.
In recent months, Canada’s relations with India have been tense. With Carney assuming office in the coming days, all eyes will be on his stance regarding this matter.
Who is Mark Carney ?
Mark Carney, 59, was born on March 16, 1965. He holds an economics degree from Harvard University (1988) and a master’s and doctorate in economics from Oxford University.
Carney served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada (2008-2013) and later as the Governor of the Bank of England (2013-2020). During the 2008 global financial crisis, he played a key role in stabilizing Canada’s economy. Notably, he became the first non-British Governor of the Bank of England since its establishment in 1694.
Despite his extensive financial experience, Carney has no prior political background. His wife, Diana, is of British descent, and they have four daughters.
