BJP MLA Mohit Beniwal, who also serves as the state BJP vice president, raised a demand during the budget session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council to rename Muzaffarnagar district as ‘Laxminagar’ in alignment with the region’s historical and cultural identity.

BJP MLA Mohit Beniwal

Speaking in the House, Beniwal emphasized that the names of our lands and cities should reflect our traditions and cultural heritage. He asserted that this is not merely a name change, but a resolution to restore cultural pride, ignite a cultural renaissance, and uphold historical truth.

“Muzaffarnagar is no ordinary land. In ‘Shukratal,’ located in this district, Raja Parikshit received the knowledge of the Bhagwat Purana from Rishi Shukdev. Should such a sacred place continue to bear the name of Mughal ruler Muzaffar Ali? This district is not only a hub of agriculture, trade, and economic prosperity but is also famous for the sweetness of its jaggery. Renaming it to ‘Laxminagar’will symbolize the economic progress of this region, much like the clean, transformative flow of the Ganges,”Beniwal stated.

His demand has garnered strong support from the local population, who affirm that the push to rename Muzaffarnagar as ‘Laxminagar’ has been ongoing for a long time. Residents believe that a name rooted in historical and ancient culture would be a welcome and significant change.

Editorial Perspective

There is no reason why the names of places associated with Muslim invaders should still exist in our country. Such changes should have been implemented long ago ! If that has not happened yet, then now is the time to rectify this in a single decisive move. The Union government must issue an order to rename all such places across the nation at once.
