Demand to rename the streets

New Delhi – After watching the movie ‘Chhava’, a group of youth in Delhi went to Akbar road and Humayun road, where they sprayed black ink on the street names and demanded that the roads be renamed. They put up posters of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and raised slogans glorifying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Additionally, they called for history lessons to focus on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maharana Pratap, instead of Mughal rulers. During the protest, chants of “Jai Shri Ram” echoed in the streets. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

Upon receiving news of the incident, Delhi Police and municipal authorities rushed to the spot and cleaned the defaced street signs. Additionally, police have launched a search operation to identify the youth responsible for blackening the signs. (This is akin to punishing a saint while letting the real culprit go free. When it is evident why the youth protested, instead of chasing and penalizing them, the administration and police should focus on renaming these streets. – Editor)

To track the individuals involved, officials are reviewing CCTV footage of the area.
Editorial PerspectiveEven after 78 years of Independence, roads in India’s capital, Delhi, still bear the names of Mughal invaders, which many Hindus find disgraceful. With the BJP in power at both the state and Centre levels, Hindus believe such names should no longer exist. The government must take immediate action to rename these streets. |
