Strict action taken to safeguard Government data
(AI apps refer to advanced systems that utilise artificial intelligence.)
New Delhi – The Indian Ministry of Finance has issued directives banning the use of ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and all other AI applications on Government computers. The circular, issued on 29.1.2025, aims to ensure the security of sensitive Government data and prevent potential cyber threats.
In the directive, Pradeep Kumar Singh, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, stated that using AI on Government computers could compromise confidential Government information. Taking this into account, the Ministry has advised all employees to refrain from using such tools on official devices. With the approval of the Secretary of the Ministry, this order has been circulated to major Government departments, including Revenue, Economic Affairs, Public Enterprises, and Financial Services.
Key Concerns:
1. Risk of Data Leaks :
AI models like ChatGPT and DeepSeek process user-entered data on external servers. If Government employees enter confidential information into these AI apps, the data could be stored elsewhere, accessed, or misused. A data leak of this nature could pose a serious threat to national security and economic policies.
2. Lack of Government Control Over AI Models :
AI models are owned by private companies. For example, ChatGPT is owned by OpenAI. The Government has no control over how these tools store or process information, increasing the risk of external interference and cyber-attacks.
3. Compliance with Data Protection Policies :
The Indian Government is working on strict data protection laws, such as the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023. Allowing Government employees to use AI tools without clear regulations could lead to violations of data security policies and expose Government systems to cyber threats.
