Kannur (Kerala) – A fast-track special court has sentenced 41-year-old madarasa teacher Mohammed Rafi to 187 years in prison and imposed a fine of ₹9 lakhs for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old minor girl continuously for two years during the COVID-19 lockdown period. Judge R. Rajesh delivered the verdict. (It would not be wrong if anyone feels that the fast-track court delivering the verdict after five years is itself a kind of injustice to the victimized girl. – Editor)

Mohammed Rafi began sexually assaulting the minor girl in March 2020 and threatened her not to disclose the abuse to anyone. When the girl appeared stressed, her parents took her to a counseling center, where she revealed the sexual abuse. Following this, the victim’s parents filed a complaint with the police. Based on the complaint, the Payyannadi police registered a case against Mohammed Rafi and conducted an investigation.
