Court schools a Muslim woman advocate on court rules after she appeared wearing a burqa

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) – A Muslim woman advocate appeared in the Srinagar bench of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court wearing a burqa to argue a case. The High Court objected to this and asked her to remove the burqa, but the woman advocate refused. ‘She claimed it was her fundamental right to be in court in such attire. On this stand of the woman advocate, the High Court sought information from the Registrar General about the law and rules regarding the attire of advocates. The ‘Bar Council of India’ for Advocates did not allow such attire. After this, the High Court asked the women advocates to maintain etiquette and professional identity in the court.

Editorial Perspective

There should be a law to revoke the degree of those violating the court rules by behaving in this manner.
