India lifted 25 crore people out of poverty in 10 years, PM Modi says in G-20 Summit

(The G-20 refers to the organisation of finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union, which includes 27 countries.)

Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) – India has lifted 25 crore people out of poverty in the last 10 years. We are providing free food grains to 80 crore people. 55 crore people are benefiting from free health insurance. We have given $20 billion (₹1.68 trillion) to farmers so far. India is contributing to global food security. Recently, we have provided assistance to countries like Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the G-20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

On the first day of the summit, Prime Minister Modi held bilateral meetings with world leaders. He discussed bilateral issues with French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Prime Minister Modi also had an informal discussion with the outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden. After meeting with Prime Minister Modi, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that discussions on a free trade agreement with India would resume next year.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva raised a question at the summit, saying, ‘When the United Nations was established, there were only 56 members. Today, there are 196 countries. Where is Africa in the UN Security Council ? Where is the representation of South American countries ? Where is Asia ? Where are countries like South Africa, Germany, and India ?’
