Bern (Switzerland) – Switzerland recently passed a law banning face coverings such as veils and nikabs. This law will come into effect in Switzerland from 1st January 2025.
1. The Swiss parliament passed the bill in this regard by 151 votes to 29. Earlier the Supreme Court had given its approval stating that anyone violating this law, would be fined 1,000 Swiss Francs (roughly Rs. 97,000).
2. The law in Switzerland resulted from a referendum held in 2021, in which Swiss voters supported a ban on face coverings in public. In Switzerland, 51.2 per cent voted in favour of the ban.
3. The Swiss Government clarified in the law that it will not ban face coverings on planes or embassy buildings.
