Washington (USA) – President-elect Donald Trump announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency” in his second administration. “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies,” Trump said in a statement. Trump has also appointed Fox News journalist Pete Hegseth to his cabinet. He has been made Defence Minister.
The announcement of Ramaswamy and particularly Musk, who leads companies with existing, lucrative Government contracts, raises immediate questions about potential conflicts of interest. It is not immediately clear how the department – which Trump said would “provide advice and guidance from outside of Government” – would operate, and whether a Congress even fully controlled by Republicans would have the appetite to approve such a massive overhaul of Government spending and operations.
Elon Musk said that the Government will save $2 trillion (Rs 168 lakh crore) through this new segment. According to some experts, this is said to be impossible. Musk can only do this if he cuts key programs like defence or Social Security.
On the campaign trail, Trump pointed to his proposed Government efficiency commission as a way to reduce Government spending. “As the first order of business, this commission will develop an action plan to totally eliminate fraud and improper payments within six months,” he said in September. “This will save trillions of dollars.”
Vivek Ramaswamy of Indian origin
Vivek Ramaswamy is an American citizen of Indian origin. Ramaswamy, who previously challenged Trump in the Republican presidential primary before endorsing him in January, made reducing waste in Government spending a key policy platform for his campaign.
Upcoming Defence Minister Hegseth has served in the Army
Pete Hegseth, Trump’s nominee for US Defence Secretary, has served in the military. He has served as a US soldier in Iraq and Afghanistan. Trump said Pete spent his entire life as a warrior for his country. He is tough, smart and believe in an ‘America First’ policy.
