Britain’s King Charles and Protesting Australian MP Lydia Thorpe

Canberra – Britain’s King Charles, who is on a tour of Australia, has faced opposition. When King Charles arrived to deliver a speech in the Australian Parliament, a female MP shouted slogans against him. “You are not my king. You are not sovereign. You committed genocide against our people,” said MP Lydia Thorpe. Thorpe also added, “Give us back our land. Give us what you stole from us.”

1. Lydia Thorpe, who opposed King Charles, arrived in Parliament dressed in traditional clothing. After raising slogans, the security forces escorted her out of the Parliament.

2. Speaking to the media outside Parliament, Lydia Thorpe said, “As long as the British monarch is the formal head of Australia, we will continue to oppose the British Empire.”

3. King Charles has visited Australia for the first time since his coronation in 2022.

Why is King Charles is opposed in Australia ?

Australia was ruled by the British. When the British came to Australia, they persecutedt the indigenous people there. Their culture was eradicated. Even today, the indigenous people are angry over this. Australia gained independence from the British rule; but there is still a Constitutional Monarchy. The British Monarch is formally considered the head of the State in Australia. In a referendum in 1999, the Australian people rejected the proposal to make Australia a dominion of the British Empire. Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, the discussions of severing ties with the British Empire have gained momentum again in Australia. That is why the British royal family is facing opposition in Australia.

Editorial Perspective

The British erased the culture and identity of the countries they ruled. What happened in India also happened in other countries. The opposition to the British royal family in various parts of the world is due to this fact. Despite this, the British royal family does not show the courtesy to apologize.
