This mosque was built before 1947, originally consisting of just two floors. Later, three additional illegal floors were added. The case has been ongoing in the Municipal Court for the past 14 years. In recent months, Hindus raised concerns, and thousands of them came together to demand the demolition of the illegal construction. Under pressure, the State Congress Government, the municipal authorities, and the mosque committee had to agree to the demolition. This Hindu mobilization was led by staunch Hindutva supporter Kamal Gautam.
A hearing on the matter is also scheduled in the Himachal Pradesh High Court, with locals having filed a petition. They argue that the Municipal Court has not issued a final decision in the last 14 years. The commissioner’s demolition order is also interim. Hindus are demanding that the High Court should instruct the municipal commissioner to take a permanent decision soon.
The chairman of the mosque committee, Mohammad Latif, stated that they have started the demolition and are raising funds for the process through local Muslim businessmen. Approval from the Waqf board was also obtained after the municipal order.
