‘Maldives would never do anything that undermines the security of India’ : Muizzu

Statement by Maldivian President Muizzu who is on a visit to India

New Delhi – “Maldives would never do anything that undermines the security of India. India is a valued partner and friend of the Maldives, and our relationship is built on mutual respect and shared interests,” said Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. He is currently on a tour of India.

1. Talking to the press, Muizzu said, “While we enhance our cooperation with other countries in various sectors, we remain committed to ensuring that our actions don’t compromise the security and stability of our region. Maldives will continue to prioritise its long-term and important relationship with India.”

2. Regarding sending back Indian soldiers from Maldives, Muizzu said, “What I did was what the people of Maldives asked me to. The recent changes reflect our efforts to address domestic priorities. India and its people will surely understand this; because India too is a democracy.”

Purpose of Muizzu’s visit to India

Maldives wants financial assistance from India and will ask for more time to repay old loans given by India. Maldives has realised that if India does not help, it will face a big crisis. It is being predicted that these issues will be discussed in Muizzu’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi.

Editorial Perspective

Historically, the countries that have aligned with China, take steps to harm India’s interest and protect Chinese interest. Who would believe Muizzu’s statement therefore ?
