Kolkata (Bengal) – The Kolkata High Court has rejected a plea seeking a ban on the screening of the film ‘The Diary of West Bengal’, based on true events in Bengal. Petitioner Rajeev Kumar Jha has claimed that ‘the film has criticised the State administration and the film may harm religious harmony’. Further hearing on this matter will be held in 3 weeks.
The Court slams petitioner saying it has many serious cases to handle
The Calcutta High Court said that there are few orders of the Supreme Court regarding the banning of books or films. Watch the movie or don’t, it’s up to you. No one is forcing you to watch. This is normal in a democratic country. If someone criticises someone else, that is their right. We have plenty of such public interest cases. We warned someone about this yesterday. The Court has many serious cases other than these PILs. The people of the country are very tolerant. Leave it to their discretion to watch the movie or not.
Releasing the film is more difficult than making it : Director Sanoj Mishra
Sanoj Mishra, the director of ‘The Diary of West Bengal’, said in Mumbai that we have to put in more effort into the release of the film than the amount of labour we have put into making it. We had to reshoot many scenes from the film. We had sent the film to the ‘Central Board of Film Censorship’ for review long ago. We had to wait for their approval.
What is in the movie ?
The film is based on true incidents of Muslim infiltration from Bangladesh into India, the Rohingya refugee crisis, Love Jihad and interfaith relations in society.
