Maharashtra Government to Withdraw Decision Making Hindi Language Mandatory

The word “mandatory” to be removed

Dadaji Bhuse, Education Minister

Mumbai, April 22 (News) – In response to widespread opposition across the state regarding the decision to make Hindi a mandatory subject from Grade 1, the Maharashtra government has decided to withdraw this decision. The matter also came up during a press conference held by Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse at Mantralaya on April 22. Journalists strongly questioned, “Why is Hindi being made mandatory from Grade 1?”

In response, Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse stated that “the term ‘mandatory’ in the government resolution will be suspended, and a revised government resolution will be issued shortly.”

During the press conference, Minister Dadaji Bhuse presented the government’s stance on making Hindi compulsory from Grade 1. Officials from the education department were also present.

At that time, Dadaji Bhuse clarified, “There are some discussions in certain places claiming that the Union Government is imposing the Hindi language; however, that is not the case. The ‘National Education Policy 2020’ promotes a three-language formula. Accordingly, in the meeting of the State Steering Committee held on September 9, 2024, it was decided to teach Hindi as the third language from Grade 1. Marathi remains the primary language in schools. English is chosen as the second language, and Hindi as the third. This decision will not affect the number of Marathi language periods in schools. The National Education Policy promotes multilingual education, and the decision to include Hindi follows that guideline.”
