New Delhi – India has stopped funding of ₹5,000 crore for a railway project in Bangladesh. This project was being run to connect the north-eastern states of India with the rest of India. Bangladesh would have also benefited from this project. India was providing funds for the Akhaura-Agartala Cross Border Railway Link, Khulna-Mongla Port Railway Line and Dhaka-Tongi- Joydebpur Railway Project in Bangladesh. Apart from these, plans were made for 5 more railway projects. They and their survey have also been stopped.
It is being speculated that the Union Government has taken this decision due to the continued anti-India attitude of Bangladesh. It is being said that India will now consider the option of connecting the North-east through Nepal and Bhutan instead of Bangladesh. Before stopping the funds, India had also recently stopped the facility of land exports given to Bangladesh. Bangladesh used to send goods to Nepal and Bhutan through Indian land routes earlier.
