New Delhi – Following the coup in Bangladesh, the chaos created by the dominance of radicalists has become a matter of concern for the Hindu community there. Hindus are being attacked. The population of Hindus in Bangladesh is constantly decreasing, facing discrimination and persecution. Compared to the year 1951, the number of Hindus in the total population of Bangladesh has decreased by 14%. Each year, around 2.3 lakh Hindus in Bangladesh are forced to leave the country.

1. Between 1965 and 2006, about 2.6 lakh acres of land owned by Hindus were confiscated under the ‘Vested Property Act’ (Enemy Property Act) in Bangladesh. 12 lakh Hindu families were affected by this.
2. During the period of 1980 to 1990, radicalist movements against Hindus increased significantly. In 1992, after the demolition of Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, many Hindu temples were set on fire in Chittagong and Dhaka.
3. Hindus were targeted during the Bangladesh Liberation War, because many Pakistanis considered them guilty of separatism. According to the official census of 1951, Hindus constituted 22% of the total population of Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan). By 1991, this number had dropped to 15%. In the 2011 census, this number came down to 8.5%. In 2022, it has become less than 8%. At the same time, the population of Muslims has increased from 76% in 1951 to more than 91% in 2022.
4. According to a report by the Hindu American Foundation, between 1964 and 2013, more than 1.1 crore Hindus fled Bangladesh due to religious persecution. The 2011 census revealed that 10 lakh Hindus disappeared from the country’s population between 2000 and 2010.
5. Between January and June 2016, 66 houses were burnt in violence targeting Hindus in Bangladesh, leaving 24 people injured and at least 49 temples destroyed.
