Assam – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed grave concerns over the rapidly changing demographics of Assam. He described the situation as a matter of life and death for him. Speaking to reporters, he highlighted the significant increase in the Muslim population in Assam, which has reached 40%, compared to 12% in 1951. Sarma emphasised that this issue transcends political boundaries, stating that many Districts have been affected by this demographic shift.

Chief Minister Sarma had made a similar statement on July 1st , when he expressed concern about the involvement of individuals from a particular religious community in criminal activities. He clarified that his statement was not a blanket accusation against all members of the religion, but pointed out the alarming situation following the Lok Sabha elections. Sarma noted that individuals from Bangladesh, particularly those belonging to the minority community, have been implicated in crimes and have also shown support for the Congress party in Assam.
