New Delhi – On 15thMay, the first set of citizenship certificates was issued under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla handed over citizenship certificates to 14 applicants in New Delhi. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, many other applicants are being given digitally signed certificates via email. During the event, the Home Secretary congratulated the applicants and highlighted the key aspects of the CAA.
Under this Act, individuals from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who had arrived in India due to religious persecution or the fear of it by 31stDecember 2014, applied for Indian citizenship. The verification process of the applications was conducted entirely through an online portal. After verification by a competent committee, it was decided to grant citizenship to 14 applicants. The CAA came into effect in December 2019.
