Vladimir Putin takes oath as President of Russia for the fifth time

Likely the only international Head of State from the Vajpayee era to the Modi era

Moscow (Russia) – Vladimir Putin has taken the oath as President of Russia for the fifth time. The ceremony took place at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow on 7th May, at 2:30 p.m. IST, and lasted approximately one hour. Putin will now remain in office for the next six years. In the elections held in Russia in March, Putin received an overwhelming 88% of the votes. The West has boycotted his inauguration ceremony due to the war declared against Ukraine.

Putin first took the presidential oath in 2000 and was subsequently re-elected in 2004, 2012, and 2018. In the previous election, he had received 77% of the votes. This indicates a further increase in his popularity in Russia. Former Chancellor of Germany Gerhard Schröder was present at the inauguration ceremony in 2018. Due to his long tenure, Putin is likely the only international Head of State to have ruled from the Vajpayee era to the Modi era.

Putin could remain President of Russia until 2036

According to the Russian Constitution, no individual could serve as president for more than two consecutive terms, but in January 2020, Putin amended the Constitution to remove this restriction. A referendum was held in Russia for this purpose, in which 60% of voters participated, and 76% supported Putin’s decision. Thus, it is said that the path is now clear for Putin to remain as president until 2036. This could potentially allow him to surpass Stalin, who ruled over the Soviet Union for nearly three decades.

Putin, the richest politician in the world

According to Forbes, Vladimir Putin was declared the most powerful person in the world from 2013 to 2016. Putin is said to be the richest person in Russia, although there is no official confirmation of this. Some believe that he is not only the richest politician in the world but also the wealthiest individual overall.
