Target to recruit up to one lakh Indian workers !
Tel Aviv (Israel) – Israel’s suspension of work permits for tens of thousands of Palestinians following the Hamas attacks on 7th October last year has opened up job opportunities for workers in countries like India. Israel has so far recruited an estimated 20,000 workers from India amid the ongoing violence in Gaza. Seeing the danger of working with Palestinian workers, Israel has started recruiting Indians. At the same time, working conditions in Israel are abysmal and experts warn that more construction workers have died in Israel than in Europe.
Annual salary of Rs. 16,47,000 !
10,000 workers each from the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have been recruited to Israel. These mainly include masons and welders. These workers will be paid a salary of Rs 16,47,000 per year. Israel has completed the first phase of recruitment and intends to recruit 50,000 to 1,00,000 workers from India.
Despite the threat of death, Indian workers are in a rush to get recruited !
A labour rights organization recently revealed that Israel has 2.5 times more worker deaths per 1,00,000 construction sites than Europe. Indian workers will get an estimated Rs. 1,32,000 per month. This salary is six times more than the total salary they get for the same job in India. That is why Indians prefer to go to Israel despite the risk of death and the places of the recruitment process being very crowded. Thousands of young Indian men have been queuing up outside recruiting centres in the northern Indian states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in recent weeks, hoping to secure employment in Israel.
Aided by Government of India
According to Haim Feiglin, Vice President of the Israel Builders Association, Israel is getting help in the recruitment process from the Indian government. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel in May 2023, the two Governments signed an agreement to provide 42,000 openings for Indian nationals in Israel’s construction and nursing fields.
Most of the recruits made by Israel were carpenters and masons. All of these will replace Palestinian workers, who have been banned from entering Israel since the Hamas invasion.
