People have a lot to say, but they are not allowed to speak : National Commission for Scheduled Castes

  • Case of atrocities against Hindu women in Sandeshkhali
  • Demand made to implement President’s Rule in Sandeshkhali

Kolkata – A team from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has arrived in Sandeshkhali, situated in the North 24 Parganas District of the State. The team has convened with the victims and intends to compile a comprehensive report for submission to the President. Anju Bala, a member of the NCSC, expressed dismay, stating, “The administration did not even register the complaints of the victims. It is a shameful incident that in today’s time as well something like this can happen to women. If someone (a Trinamool Congress activist) liked any woman, he would take her by force. Here atrocities are done against women by politicians and they are left to suffer. This shows how low the level of politics has fallen here. Such political conduct is intolerable. We want President’s Rule to be imposed in Sandeshkhali as people here are not safe at all.”

Chief Minister Mamata has no ‘mamata’

Bala further said that, “The Chief Minister of Bengal is herself a woman. Her name is Mamata, but there is no such thing as ‘mamata’ (empathy/compassion) in her mind. She does not want to reveal anything, she does not register FIRs of torture against women. The country will not forgive her.”

It is unbelievable that the State Government is acting unilaterally : Commission’s Chairman Arun Halder

NCSC Chairman Arun Haldar said, “I have received the report regarding Sandeshkhali. The victim women belong to Scheduled Castes. The entire Commission went to Bengal to listen to them. Following these conversations, I will report to the President. Truth and falsehood will emerge from discussion with victims. It is unbelievable that the State Government is acting unilaterally. This Commission is a constitutional body, not a political body. We have not come here to do politics, but to listen to the problems of the people.”

What is the matter ?

In Sandeshkhali, women have levied allegations of sexual harassment and land usurpation against Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his followers. Local women have been staging protests over the past few days, demanding the apprehension of Sheikh Shahjahan. Additionally, in a demonstration of their discontent, these women set fire to the fields and farmhouse belonging to another Trinamool Congress leader, Shiv Prasad Hazra.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Such a demand from a Constitutional Commission is serious. Not just Sandeshkhali, but the entire State of Bengal should be brought under President’s Rule.
  • Why are the so-called protectors of Scheduled Castes and Tribes now silent ?
