Pune (Maharashtra) – A play organised by Pune University’s ‘Lalit Kala Manch’ on 2nd February showed the male actor playing the role of Sitamata cursing and smoking a cigarette. Besides this, the role of Shriram and Sitamata is shown as a clown. ABVP workers stopped this objectionable play as they could not bear the denigration of the Deities while the play was going on. (Congratulations to the ABVP workers who stopped the mockery of the Deities ! – Editor) Also, ABVP activists thrashed the actors of the play for trying to portray the events of Ramayan in a wrong manner. Following that, Police have been deployed at Savitribai Phule Pune University campus. A student named Bhavesh Rajendra who is a student of Lalit Kala Kendra (Fine Arts Centre) has written and directed this play.

Take action against the culprits – ABVP
ABVP’s Shubhankar Bachal has stated that ‘this kind of language about Hindu Deities will not be tolerated and action should be taken against the concerned culprits’.
Objectionable parts in the play
The complaint filed by Harshvardhan Harpude states that –
1. While the play was being performed, the boy playing Sitamata’s role was smoking a cigarette on the stage.
2. In the play, the character of Lakshman was shown giving a massage to Ravan.
3. Seeing Ravan, Shriram ran away and was referred to in a derogatory language as ‘Ram Bhaga-Bhaga’.
6 students arrested along with the department head of the university !
After ABVP filed a complaint in this matter, the Police registered a case against the head of the Lalit Kala Kendra department and arrested 6 students. This is the first time that a department head of a university has been arrested in this manner. The Police have registered a case against Dr Praveen Bhole, Bhavesh Patil, Prathamesh Sawant and other unknown students of Lalit Kala Kendra. All the accused have also been arrested.
Patit Pavan organisation demands action against department heads and students through an appeal !
Patit Pavan organisation has handed an appeal to Pune University in this matter. It said that while ordinary students and activists were peacefully raising their voice about the incident of the play, the students of Lalit Kala Kendra thrashed the students who objected to the play with spades and batons. All this incident is reprehensible. The administration should take immediate action against the concerned and also suspend all the culprits immediately. The appeal further said that Pravin Bhole, Head of Department of the Lalit Kala Kendra, Assistant Vice-Chancellor had the idea of all this. It should be noted that if you fail to take immediate action in this matter, the organisation will strongly protest against you.
Lalit Kala Kendra vandalised
In this case, 6 persons including the head of Lalit Kala Kendra, Dr Praveen Bhole, have been arrested and produced in the Court. The Court rejected the Government party’s demand for Police custody and remanded 5 accused students along with Dr. Praveen Bhole to judicial custody. Therefore, the process of applying for bail to the accused started immediately. A march was organised on the premises of the Lalit Kala Kendra in the support of its students. Due to this march, the ABVP activists became aggressive and vandalised the Lalit Kala Kendra. These workers broke the glass of Lalit Kala Kendra and smeared ink on the closed door and boards. After this, the Police took ABVP workers into custody. A large Police force has been deployed in this area at present.
Editorial Perspective
It is shameful to denigrate Hindu Deities under the garb of art in Pune, the place known as the home for education. Strict action should be taken against the organisers of this play and the culprits who misled the students by denigrating the Deities, only then such incidents can be stopped ! |
