Varanasi (UP) – The safety of female students in India’s prestigious IIT universities has come under question. An engineering student was molested in the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi on the night of 1st November. Three bike-borne accused separated the female student and her male friend at gunpoint. The female student was then forced to strip her clothes. The accused also shot a video of this incident. 1. After the incident of 1st November came to light, 2,500 students protested on the university premises the next day. However, in the 30th October incident, the victim remained silent for fear of infamy and did not file any written complaint.
2. Pranav, Students’ Parliament vice-president of the university, said that some men related to the 30th October incident have been identified.
3. Bhelupur Deputy Commissioner of Police Praveen Singh said that several suspects are being interrogated. We cannot reveal the identity of anyone at this time as it may affect the investigation. Two Sub-Inspectors of Police (1 male and 1 female) and 5 constables will be deployed for the security of the University premises.
4. University official Prof. Vikas Dubey said that action has been taken to meet the demand for a closed campus. A boundary wall will be constructed between the premises of BHU and IIT. Along with this, there will be a night blockade at the place where the incidents of molestation took place.
5. Although 2,500 IIT students have shown support for this border wall, 20,000 BHU students have opposed it. Students of both universities are protesting in this matter.
