The Supreme Court ruled the bulldozer action on five houses in Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) as unjust !

Ordered compensation of ₹10 lakh per house

New Delhi – The Supreme Court stated that a roof over a citizen’s head cannot be removed by a bulldozer and that the demolition of these houses violated constitutional values and legal principles. The court ruled that the demolition of five houses in Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) four years ago was unlawful and directed the authorities to compensate each petitioner with ₹10 lakh.

In March 2021, the authorities in Lukarganj, Prayagraj, demolished the homes of a professor, a lawyer, and three others. The petitioners argued that their houses were wrongfully demolished by the administration on the suspicion that they were associated with gangster Atiq Ahmed.

The Allahabad High Court had upheld the demolition, following which the petitioners challenged the decision in the Supreme Court.
