Moscow (Russia) – President Vladimir Putin made a shocking claim that Russia had successfully tested the Burevestnik, an experimental nuclear-powered cruise missile. He, however, did not specify when or where the test was carried out. On the 5th of October 2023, Putin said that Russia could resume nuclear testing, for which Russia could revoke its ratification of a nuclear test ban treaty.

Putin said further, “There is no need to bring any change to Russia’s nuclear policy. Russia can attack invaders with hundreds of nuclear weapons within seconds; however, there doesn’t seem to be any such possibility. Russia has almost completed work on an ultramodern intercontinental type of nuclear-capable ballistic missile. These missiles can carry more than ten nuclear weapons at a time.”
At the beginning of February 2023, Putin suspended Russia’s involvement in the arms control treaty with the USA, which limits nuclear stocks.
Depreciation of Russia’s Rouble
Immediately after Putin’s claim, Russia’s Rouble tumbled. In February 2022, before the start of the war with Ukraine, 1 USD was 80 Roubles. As the war started, the Rouble further weakened, and now, after Putin’s statement, the Rouble’s value depreciated past 100 per USD.
