Dehradun (Uttarakhand) – Due to land subsidence in Joshimath in Chamoli 561 houses have developed cracks, and even roads are affected by cracks. Flowing water carrying soil along is also causing anxiety along with land subsidence. Citizens had no option but to migrate to a safer place; 66 families have migrated so far. A decision has been taken to stop the longest rope-way in Asia (Means of transport for people living in mountainous areas) from operating as the cracks are increasing in the city every day. In order to save people from all eventualities the Government under the leadership of the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is trying various measures. CM Dhami will be visiting the area to get the full report of the oncoming calamity. Joshimath is situated at the banks of River Alakananda in the Himalayas.

1. The main post office to has been damaged with cracks; hence it has been shifted to a safe place. Buildings surrounding the Jotirmath complex and Lakshmi Narayan Temple have developed cracks. Looking to the threatening situation the Government has issued a helpline number – 8171748602, for the benefit of the citizens trapped under this calamity.

2. ‘Joshimath Bachao Sangarsh Samiti’ had announced closing the market on 5th January. People are furious and are raising questions on the working of the administration. They held a morcha on 4th January in protest. There are cracks at various places, and flowing water at various places also is causing a nuisance, but the Government does not seem to be serious about the disaster. Agitators demand some action from the Government to assure the people of the affected areas. Water and cracks are natural as well as due to the careless attitude of the citizens. 5 member team comprising Geologist, engineers and Government officials inspected the affected areas. They found that many areas in Joshimath had gone underwater due to man-made and natural reasons. The land subsidence was due to the cutting of trees and mountains. Due to no planning, almost all areas in Joshimath are being dug; shops and houses have developed cracks.
