Kathmandu (Nepal) – After a dramatic turn of events, the leader of the CPN-Maoist party Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda will become Nepal’s Prime Minister. In the mid-term elections held in Nepal, the Nepalese people voted in favour of Sher Bahadur Deuba, the leader of the Nepali Congress and a supporter of India. Prachanda had formed a pre-election alliance with the Nepal Congress.

The alliance of Prachanda and Deuba won the most seats in the election. But Prachanda later retracted and made an alliance with pro-China former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli to keep the post of Prime Minister for himself. President Bidya Devi Bhandari will now administer the oath to Prachanda as Prime Minister. Prachanda will become the Prime Minister of Nepal for the third time. He has claimed the support of 169 MPs in the 275-member House of Representatives.

Editorial viewpoint
Looking at the growing influence of China in Nepal, the possibility of China’s interference for not allowing the pro-Indian Deuba to become Prime Minister cannot be ruled out. India needs to be more alert now. |
