The US calls on India not to sign an arms deal with Russia
Editorial Comments

New Delhi – India imports crude oil from Russia according to its energy needs. According to available data, India’s monthly oil imports from Russia are less than those imported by European countries in just half a day. Hence, this fact also should be considered. India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s words silenced reporters in the US. He was speaking at a press conference after a ministerial meeting between India and the United States in Washington. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was also present. We urge all countries not to enter into new major arms deals with Russia in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken told at a news conference.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar Tuesday said that India imports less oil from Russia than Europe does in an afternoon when asked about India’s position on the Russia-Ukraine war and its foreign policy goals.

Asked why India did not protest Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Jaishankar said, now, as Secretary Blinken has pointed out, we have made several statements which outline our position in the UN, in our parliament, and in other forums. And briefly, what those positions state is that we are against the conflict; we are for dialogue and diplomacy; we are for an urgent cessation of violence, and we are prepared to contribute in multiple ways to these objectives.

Telling about the US stand on sanctions, Anthony Blinken said there is, of course, a long history and a long relationship between India and Russia, including when it comes to military equipment. That relationship took hold many years ago at a time when we were not able to be a partner with India. We are now both able and willing to be such a partner, to be a security partner of choice for India. When India bought the S-400 air defence system from Russia, he said we have not yet decided whether to grant sanctions or concessions under US sanctions law.

We are concerned about human rights violations in India – Anthony Blinken
Editorial comment
Instead of talking about the alleged human rights violations in India, Blinken should be concerned about the racist attacks in his country. He should pay more attention to how these will not repeat. India should make it clear to the US and respond by continuing to raise concerns about human rights violations in the US. |

We are committed to our democratic values, such as protecting human rights. We regularly engage with our Indian partners on these shared values, and to that end, we are monitoring some recent concerning developments in India, including a rise in human rights abuses by some Government, Police, and prison officials, in some Indian States.
