Editorial comment

While the protest by ISKCON is commendable, drastic steps need to be taken to keep a check on religious fanatics. India must take initiative for this !

New Delhi – On 23rd October, ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) staged a protest near its 700 temples in 150 countries against the attacks on Hindus by religious fanatics in Bangladesh. It also demanded stern action against these fanatics.

Speaking in this regard, ISKCON spokesperson and Vice-President Radharaman Das appealed to Hindus, ‘The international community has always ignored the atrocities of the Hindu brothers in Bangladesh. In order to create global awareness about the attacks on Hindus, we will hold ‘Jagatik Kirtan Andolan’ (Global Kirtan Protest) at 700 places from Tokyo to Toronto. Hindus should go to the nearest agitation site and protest the atrocities against Hindus’.

The protest received a huge response on Twitter. Devout Hindus around the world raised awareness on the issue by using the hashtag #SaveBangladeshiHindus. The hashtag ranked 5th among global trends, while it was at the top for several hours at the national level. More than 4.7 lakh Hindu devotees tweeted using this hashtag.

Spokespersons, activists, and advocates of many pro-Hindu organisations along with various eminent devout Hindus took an active part in this agitation. Thousands of Hindus took to Twitter to post their photos holding placards in their hands demanding protection for Bangladeshi Hindus.
