Death toll feared to reach 10,000 to 1 lakh : Venezuela earthquake

Caracas (Venezuela) – Two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela, a South American country, at around 10 p.m. on 24 June caused widespread devastation. The two earthquakes, which occurred just 39 seconds apart, measured 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. The tremors shook several cities, including the capital Caracas. Roads split open, many buildings developed major cracks, and some houses collapsed like a pack of cards. Traffic across the affected areas has come to a standstill, while emergency teams are making strenuous efforts to rescue people trapped beneath the debris.

Although the official death toll has not yet been confirmed, fears have been expressed that it could reach anywhere between 10,000 and 1 lakh. So far, reports indicate that 32 people have been killed and more than 700 injured. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a national emergency.

The first earthquake struck near the city of San Felipe at 10:04 p.m. and measured 7.2 on the Richter scale. Just 39 seconds later, a second, more powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 struck near Yumare. The epicentres of the two earthquakes were only 45 kilometres apart. Tremors were also felt in neighbouring Colombia. As aftershocks are expected over the next few hours, the authorities have urged citizens to remain alert.

Fear grips citizens

Eyewitnesses said that refrigerators, cupboards and household items were thrown to the ground during the tremors. They said they had never experienced such a terrifying earthquake before.

An 80-year-old woman said that the earthquake was even more devastating than the destructive earthquake of 1967.
