Objectionable images of Hindu deities removed by Instagram

Delhi High Court was duly apprised by Instagram

Instagram took cognisance of the petition filed by Mr. Aditya Singh Deshwal and acted accordingly

  • Mr. Aditya Singh Deshwal’s action against the denigration of Hindu deities is really commendable. Every devout Hindu should take a leaf from this incidence and register his dissent
  • We must realise that Instagram has acted only after a petition was filed in the Court. Instagram should establish such a mechanism in place that these objectionable contents were never allowed to be posted on its platform. It should also block the concerned user accounts permanently so that it serves as a deterrent for potential miscreants.

New Delhi – Instagram informed the Delhi High Court that the objectionable pictures of Hindu Deities which were posted by some Instagram users have been removed from its platform. The Court had earlier reprimanded Instagram and its parent company – Facebook and had issued a show-cause notice. The Court also asked to provide factual evidence to ascertain if they had complied with the latest Information Technology Rules issued by the Government of India. The next hearing is scheduled on 16th August.

  1. Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Instagram in this case, told the Court that the objectionable content had been removed from the platform. He further added that the action taken pertaining to this case by Instagram would not be provided to any third party. He assured the Court that the Grievance Redressal Officer has been duly appointed by the firm as required by the new set of rules issued by the Government earlier this year. The same Grievance Officer has been given the responsibility to look into such complaints, he added.
  2. The Court has also issued a notice and sought a report from the Central Government describing the steps taken so far by the Government and the Social Media companies towards ensuring compliance with the latest Information Technology Rules issued in February.

What was the case ?

Objectionable pictures were posted by an Instagram account ‘Islam ki Sherni’. The catchphrase used vulgar language which accompanied the objectionable and controversial pictures of Hindu Deities. Mr. Aditya Singh Deshwal had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against Facebook-owned social media platform Instagram in this regard.

(The intention underlying display of this image is not to hurt religious sentiments of Hindus, but make them comprehend the denigration –  Editor, Dainik Sanatan Prabhat)
