Verdict after 28 years

Lucknow (U.P.) – A special CBI Court in Lucknow acquitted all 32 accused in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case. Those acquitted include senior BJP leaders LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Vinay Katiyar, Uma Bharati, Kalyan Singh and Sadhvi Ritambhara. The case had caught the attention of the entire country after the Ram Janmabhoomi verdict. At the time of the hearing, 26 accused were present in the Court. LK Advani, however, was present through video conferencing.

The judge observed that the demolition of Babri was not a premeditated act, it happened suddenly. He acquitted the accused, saying there was no concrete evidence against them. The Court said that Vishwa Hindu Parishad has not played any direct or indirect role in this.

The CBI, which probed the case, had submitted 351 witnesses and about 600 documents to theCourt as evidence. Charges were filed against 48 people out of which 16 died during the trial.
