Washington (USA) – Following recent talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland, the US has granted a 60-day exemption from certain sanctions on Iranian oil. The Trump administration has eased restrictions on the production and sale of Iranian oil and petrochemical products until 21 August. According to the United States, the decision was taken after Iran agreed to allow the continued passage of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
President Donald Trump stated that Iran has agreed to allow international verification of its nuclear facilities. He said this would provide long-term assurance to the world that Iran’s nuclear programme is not intended for the development of nuclear weapons. Under this arrangement, officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, could once again be stationed in Iran.
However, Iran has rejected the US claim. According to the state news agency IRNA, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei clarified that cooperation with the IAEA would continue only under previously agreed rules and that Iran had made no new commitments.
Military remains fully prepared despite talks – Iran
Ghadir Nezami, Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated that despite ongoing discussions with the United States, there had been no reduction in military preparedness. He said the Iranian armed forces remained fully ready to respond to any threat.
The Strait of Hormuz will not return to its previous status – Iran
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the Strait of Hormuz would not return to its pre-conflict status. He said that Iran would manage this vital maritime route in its own manner while continuing to comply with international regulations.
Following the first round of talks with the United States in Switzerland, Ghalibaf reiterated, “We never trusted the Americans, we do not trust them today, and it would be wise to remain cautious in the future as well.”
