Malappuram (Kerala): A shocking incident has come to light in which gold jewellery weighing 93.31 grams, seized and kept in safe custody, was stolen from Karipur Police Station in Malappuram district. A high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
According to police sources, some passengers had forgotten the jewellery at Karipur International Airport. Three gold chains, two earrings, one ring and one bracelet found there were honestly handed over by members of the public and deposited at the police station.
The jewellery had been kept safely in a cupboard at the police station so that its rightful owners could identify and reclaim it. However, the jewellery has now gone missing.
The incident has caused major embarrassment to the entire police force. CCTV footage from Karipur Police Station is being examined to determine whether the theft was committed by someone within the police station or by an outsider. Statements of all police officers and staff at the police station have already been recorded.
The investigating officers said that the inquiry would be completed and a report submitted to the Malappuram District Superintendent of Police within the next few days.
