Scientific test conducted by ‘Maharshi Adhyatma Vishwavidyalaya’ (MAV) using the ‘Bio-well GDV’ device
As per Yoga Shastra (Hatha Yoga and Patanjali Yoga) and Ayurveda, performing Surya Namaskar activates and balances an individual’s Kundalini chakras. The upward and downward movements of the spine during Surya Namaskar help awaken the dormant Kundalini energy in the Muladhara chakra at the base of the spine, assisting in pulling it upwards through the Sushumna Nadi (The central channel of the spiritual energy flow system, which extends from the base of the spine to top of the head). Performing the 12 postures of Surya Namaskar while chanting the mantras associated with the 12 Names of the Sun makes this process even deeper and more intense.

June 21st is celebrated worldwide as ‘International Yoga Day.’ On this occasion, we are publishing this article on the effects of Surya Namaskar on a person’s Kundalini chakras. MAV research team studied the effect using a scientific device called ‘Bio-well GDV’ (Note 1) on Dr. Bhikaji Bhosale (age 70), a seeker at MAV, before and after performing 12 Surya Namaskars with the respective mantra chanting.

Note 1 – Information on the Bio-well GDV device
Researchers led by Dr Konstantin Korotkov from Russia developed the Bio-well device based on ‘Gas Discharge Visualization’ technology. It consists of a camera useful for analysing an individual’s energy and a computerised system. During the analysis, a mild and painless electric impulse is passed through each finger of the individual for less than one second. This stimulates the emission of extremely subtle particles called photons and electrons from the skin. Photographs of the photon emissions from each finger are captured through the camera in the Bio-well GDV device. Based on these photographs, the computerised system provides information on the individual’s energy field and Kundalini chakras.
1. Useful points for understanding the size and position of the seven chakras in the images obtained through the Bio-well GDV device
1A. Size of the chakra : If the size of a chakra in the image obtained through the device is appropriate, it implies that the organs associated with that chakra are receiving the required quantity of subtle energy from it.
1B. Position of the chakra : If a chakra appears on or near the central line in the image obtained through the device, it implies that the chakra is in a balanced state.
1C. Function of the chakras : Generally, the lower 3 chakras – Muladhara, Swadhishthana and Manipura – provide the subtle energy required for physical functioning, whereas the upper 4 chakras – Anahata, Vishuddha, Adnya and Sahasrara – provide the subtle energy required for mental, intellectual and spiritual functioning.
1D. Function of the left and right sides : According to Yogashastra, the left side of an individual corresponds to the Ida or Chandranadi (Moon channel), conducive to subtle-level functioning while the right side corresponds to the Pingala or Suryanadi (Sun channel), conducive to gross-level functioning. Chandranadi is cooling in nature, whereas Suryanadi is intense.
1E. A chakra positioned to the left or right of the central line : If a chakra appears to the left of the central line, it means that the chakra is inactive (in the nirgun [Non-materialised] state) or that introversion has increased. If a chakra appears to the right of the central line, it means that the chakra is active (in the sagun [Materialised] state) or that extroversion has increased.
2. A comparative study of the effects on each chakra after ‘the seeker performed Surya Namaskar’:
To understand the state of the individual’s Kundalini-chakras, computer-generated images captured through the camera in the Bio-well GDV device before and after performing 12 Surya Namaskars are given ahead. The chakras are shown in these images from ‘top to bottom’ in the following order : 1. Sahasrara 2. Ajna 3. Vishuddha 4. Anahata 5. Manipura 6. Swadhishthan 7. Muladhara.
1. Before Surya Namaskar

2. After 12 Surya Namaskars

3. Principles presented in a concise form through research-based study and their spiritual analysis
3 A. Changes in the seeker’s Kundalini chakras after performing 12 Surya Namaskars
3 A 1. Increase in the size of six chakras : As the seeker performed 12 Surya Namaskars along with chanting mantras, the size of 6 chakras, except Vishuddha, increased. This is a spiritually beneficial state for the chakras as this implies that they have received energy and can perform their functions better.
3 A 2. Decrease in the size of the Vishuddha chakra : The seeker performed the 12 Surya Namaskars while chanting 12 Names of the Sun in Vaikhari (verbally, through the mouth) mode, and since the mouth is associated with the Vishuddha chakra, this chakra received the highest amount of spiritual healing. Consequently, the distressing energy present in that chakra decreased, causing its size to reduce slightly. Additionally, the chakra became inactive. This is also a spiritually beneficial state.
3 A 3. Four chakras moving near or onto the central line to receive the divine principle : After performing Surya Namaskar, 2 of the participant’s chakras (Sahasrar and Muladhar) aligned close to the central line while the Manipura and Swadhishthana chakras came exactly onto the central line. The central line represents the Kundalini energy’s Sushumna Nadi. When chakras align near this Nadi, they become conducive to absorbing the divine principle. Spiritually, this is an excellent state.
3 A 4. Three chakras becoming inactive : After performing Surya Namaskar, the seeker’s Ajna, Vishuddha, and Anahata chakras became inactive, despite receiving energy from the Surya Namaskar and mantras, was because they became introverted. This is a spiritually favourable state because introversion is conducive for Manolaya (dissolution of the mind) in spiritual practice.
4. Summary :
Performing Surya Namaskar increased the size of six out of seven chakras which implies that they received spiritual energy and started performing their functions in a better manner.
Of these, four chakras moved close to the central line, indicating that they became conducive to absorbing the divine principle. Three chakras became introverted, conducive for manolaya. The Vishuddha chakra received the most spiritual healing, leading to a reduction in its size due to elimination of distressing energy.
This experiment demonstrates that ‘performing Surya Namaskar is beneficial for all aspects of an individual’s life.’
