OBC reservation in West Bengal reduced from 17% to 7%

Decision of the ruling BJP Govt

Kolkata – The BJP government in Bengal has reduced OBC reservation from 17% to 7%. According to the new list, only 66 castes will now remain within the scope of OBC reservation.

1. The government stated that this decision is based on the Calcutta High Court’s order in 2024. The Court had declared the process of adding 77 additional castes to the OBC list during the period from 2010 to 2012 as illegal and unconstitutional. However, the status of castes included in the OBC category before 2010 will remain unchanged.

2. This decision has ended the ‘OBC-A’ and ‘OBC-B’ system that was in force during the Mamata Banerjee government. ‘OBC-A’ was getting 10 percent reservation, while ‘OBC-B’ was getting 7 percent reservation. Many new castes were also added during this period.

3. The Calcutta High Court had given a verdict against this in 2024. Due to this verdict, about 12 lakh OBC certificates issued after 2010 became invalid.
