Iran calls US seizure of ships ‘piracy’; lodges protest with the UN

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani

Tehran/Washington DC – Iran has lodged a protest against the United States at the United Nations. According to a report by Tehran Times, Iran made several serious allegations against the US through a formal letter. Iran has claimed that by seizing Iranian vessels, the United States has committed an act of “piracy and hostage taking.” Iran has urged the United Nations Security Council to condemn the US action and take appropriate measures in the matter.

Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated that the US seized two vessels named “Majestic” and “Tiffany.” In addition, approximately 38 lakh barrels of Iranian oil were confiscated. He described the action as illegal and an interference in international trade. According to him, the US conduct violates the UN Charter, international law, and maritime law. He also warned that if such actions are not curbed, they could set a dangerous precedent and weaken the rule of law globally.

Trump rejects Iran’s proposal for de-escalation

Iran had proposed to the United States that it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the US dropped its insistence on restricting Iran’s nuclear programme. However, Donald Trump rejected this proposal.

Editorial Perspective

The United Nations is effectively influenced by the United States; therefore, it is unlikely to take Iran’s complaint seriously.
