Arson and vandalism in Murshidabad and Purulia; saffron flags torn down

Murshidabad (Bengal) – On the evening of 27 March, processions taken out on the occasion of Ramnavami in Murshidabad and Purulia were attacked by religious fanatics, who carried out vandalism and arson. Several people were injured in the violence.
To bring the situation under control, a large contingent of the Rapid Action Force and police was deployed. Deputy Inspector General Ajit Singh Yadav stated that several rioters have been arrested. Section 144 has been imposed across the city.
In Jangipur of Murshidabad, when the procession that began from Mackenzie Park reached Phultala Mod, it was attacked with bricks and stones. The attack was pre-planned. A similar violent incident occurred in the Para area of Purulia, where a peaceful procession was targeted by religious fanatics. Videos of these attacks have gone viral on social media.
According to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, the sacred saffron flag was pulled down and thrown in an insulting manner. This is not merely an insult to Dharma, but a direct attack on the religious sentiments of the people. The incident created panic on the streets, forcing people to run for their lives. Is hoisting the saffron flag in one’s own State now a crime ?
