Mumbai – From March 2026, Mumbai’s traffic management system has come fully under the control of artificial intelligence (AI). The system has been integrated with the Mumbai Traffic Police’s e-challan platform. As a result, violations such as wrong-way driving, signal jumping, and lane indiscipline are immediately detected by the system, enabling enforcement actions without human intervention. Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Government of Maharashtra has accelerated the implementation of an AI-based traffic management initiative. The primary objective of this initiative is to address issues at identified “black spots”—locations where conventional traffic control measures have proven inadequate. The system is being actively implemented in key areas such as Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Andheri, and Chandivali.
Advantages of the New Traffic Management System !1. Free from human constraints, the system uses citywide camera networks to allow AI to accurately assess vehicle volume, density, and queue lengths. 2. The system effectively manages traffic congestion. For instance, if one road has a 2-kilometre-long traffic jam while the opposite side has minimal traffic, it reduces the green signal time for the less congested lane and reallocates it to the busier route within seconds. 3. The system does not only respond to current conditions but also predicts future traffic patterns. It can anticipate where congestion will occur 15 minutes in advance and uses a ‘green wave’ (continuous green signals) to ensure smooth traffic flow. 4. If a particular road experiences congestion every Tuesday morning, the system proactively adjusts signal timings for that specific day and time in the following weeks. 5. Preliminary trials on the Andheri East–West corridors have shown a reduction in waiting time by approximately 12% to 18%. |
