Attack by Muslims on the American Consulate in Karachi (Pakistan) : 12 killed

Tehran (Iran) / Karachi (Pakistan) – The war between the United States, Israel and Iran continues, with both sides launching missile strikes against each other. Iran is also carrying out attacks on US military bases in neighbouring countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Attacks have been reported on cities in several countries, including Dubai. Air services have been suspended. Many Indians are stranded in Dubai and Qatar.

Iran had earlier claimed that its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, had survived the previous day’s attack. However, this morning Iran officially declared that Khamenei was killed in the attack and announced a 40-day period of mourning.

Meanwhile, seeking revenge for Khamenei’s killing, local Muslims in Karachi attacked and vandalised the American Consulate, setting parts of it on fire. During the incident, 12 Pakistanis were reportedly killed in retaliatory firing by security forces acting in self-defence.

Mojtaba Khamenei chosen as Iran’s Supreme Leader

Following the death of Ali Khamenei, his younger son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been selected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader.

American consulates in Karachi and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir set ablaze

 

Angered over Khamenei’s death, protesters in Karachi stormed the American Consulate, breached the main entrance, entered the premises, vandalised property and set it on fire. It was reportedly observed that no Karachi police personnel were present to restrain them at the time. Twelve Pakistanis were killed in the subsequent firing. It remains unclear whether the firing was carried out by US security personnel stationed at the consulate or by Karachi police. Protests were also reported outside the American Consulate in Lahore.

The American Consulate located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was also reportedly set on fire.

Attempted attack on US Embassy in Baghdad (Iraq)

In Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, demonstrators attempted to enter the high-security zone of the US Embassy. Security forces used tear gas to disperse them. Protesters reportedly hurled stones at security personnel while carrying flags of Iran-backed armed groups. Similar protests are said to be ongoing in other provinces of southern Iraq.

“We will carry out the largest attack !” – Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump, on 1 March, warned Iran that the largest attack would be launched against it the same day. He stated that the US is carrying out strikes on Iran of a scale it had never imagined and warned Iran against even considering any attack on the United States.

“The most horrific military attack” to be launched ! – Warning from Iranian military

The Iranian military has vowed revenge for Khamenei’s killing. Through the social media platform Telegram, it declared that the most horrific military attack in Iran’s history could begin at any moment. It stated that the intensity of attacks on US military bases would be further increased. Iran declared that it would not rest until it had taken strict, decisive and regrettable revenge for the killing of the Islamic world’s religious leader.

Senior Iranian military officials killed

In the US–Israel strikes, apart from Khamenei and some of his family members, several Iranian military officials were also killed. The Commander-in-Chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Mohammad Pakpour, was reported dead. Additionally, seven senior officials from Iran’s defence leadership were killed.

New York Mayor Mamdani criticises the United States

The Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, criticised the US and Israel over their attack on Iran. Posting on X, he said that bombing cities, killing innocent people and opening a new front for war is not what American citizens want. They do not want another war to change Iran’s government. They want relief from rising inflation and desire peace. He stated that his priority is to ensure the safety of every New Yorker. He added that he is in contact with the Police Commissioner and emergency management officials. Addressing Iranians in New York directly, he said: “You are part of this city; you are our neighbours, small business owners, students, artists, workers and community leaders. You will remain safe here.”

Dr S Jaishankar speaks to the Foreign Ministers of Iran and Israel

India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, held telephonic conversations with the Foreign Ministers of Israel and Iran. Posting on X, he stated that he had spoken with Israel’s Foreign Minister and urged dialogue and diplomatic coordination to reduce tensions. He also held a telephonic discussion with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi.
