New Delhi – The Supreme Court on 13th January dismissed a PIL seeking the removal of the oil portrait of Veer Savarkar from the Central Hall of the Parliament and other public places. The PIL was filed by retired civil servant B Balamurugan. He had also sought a direction that the Government should not honour any individual against whom there are allegations of serious crimes or anti-national activities, unless such persons are acquitted by a court of law.

Strong remarks of the SC
When informed that Balamurugan could not come to Delhi to argue the matter due to financial constraints, the Bench reacted sharply. The Court observed that he was a former civil servant and was fully capable of appearing in person. The Bench told him in clear terms that he was wasting the time of the Court and warned that a heavy penalty could be imposed for filing such a petition. The Court also remarked, “Who do you think you are ?” while expressing displeasure over the nature of the plea. The judges advised the petitioner, “Please do not get involved in such controversies. Enjoy your retirement. Play a constructive role in society.”
Withdrawal of petition
Following these observations, Balamurugan chose to withdraw the petition. The Court thereafter disposed of the matter. (Those who file such petitions deserve nothing less than punishment in the Cellular Jail. – Editor)
