Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya’s outrageous statement in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) – Women belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes are targeted because some ancient texts allegedly contain beliefs that raping women from these communities earns merit equal to undertaking a pilgrimage. Such crimes are often committed collectively and are linked to a “perverted mentality”, claimed Congress MLA from Madhya Pradesh, Phool Singh Baraiya. His statement has drawn sharp criticism.

In an interview, Phool Singh Baraiya said that the theory behind rape is that regardless of a man’s mental state, his mind can get disturbed on seeing a beautiful girl while walking on the road. Thereafter, his mind may provoke him to rape a woman. Even though women from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes are not beautiful, they are raped because their religious scriptures say so, he claimed.

Congress distances itself from Baraiya’s statement

Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari dissociated the party from Baraiya’s statement and said that rape cannot be justified under any circumstances. Anyone who commits rape is a criminal. This cannot be linked to caste or religion. Sexual violence is a serious crime, and any attempt to justify it is unacceptable.
