China Develops Air and Naval Facilities in Bangladesh

New Delhi – China is helping Bangladesh to upgrade Lalmonirhat airfield near Indian border. A Chinese firm built this base at Pekua in Bangladesh to house its submarines and warships. The information has been revealed in the report submitted by the standing committee of India’s Foreign Ministry.

1. India questioned the Director General of Military Operations of Bangladesh when he assured that that runway would not be used for military activities. (Editorial Perspective : Who is going to believe him considering the anti-India activities of Bangladesh ?)

2. Presently, Bangladesh Navy has two submarines. It has entered into a contract with China this year under which Bangladesh will let China expand the Mongla Port.

3. The standing committee of India’s Foreign Ministry has stated that a country like China spreading its roots in Bangladesh is a serious concern for India’s security.

Headache for India

Bangladesh Lalmonirhat air base is fifteen km away from the northern border of India. India’s ‘Siliguri Corridor’ falls in the range of Lalmonirhat base. Siliguri Corridor located in Bengal is a 22 km strip of very narrow land and on the borders of Nepal and Bangladesh. It is the only land that joins the seven North-Eastern States with India; therefore, it is a very strategic and sensitive region for India.

Editorial Perspective

China is trying to spread its presence in its neighbouring countries viz. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal to corner India. Bangladesh is presently involved in anti-India activities. If it gets support from China, it will be a matter of concern for India’s security. India should realise it and take aggressive stand.
