American Company dismisses an officer for racist comment against Indians

San Francisco (USA) – An American AI company has dismissed a senior officer after he made an objectionable comment about the participation of Indians and South Asians in a hackathon held here, accompanied by the publication of a related photograph. The comment was swiftly condemned by users across social media platforms and has become a matter of debate at the international level.

1. It has been alleged that Mr. Nik Pash, the AI Head of a company by name ‘Cline’ posted a picture on social media and made a comment ‘Imagine the Smell’ below the picture.

2. The picture showed engineers participating in the hackathon, a large number of whom were of Indian and South Asian origin.

3. Many western countries use the phrase ‘Imagine the Smell’ to make racist comments. The ‘Whites’ have been making derogatory and insulting remarks against the ‘Blacks’ for many years, claiming that ‘blacks have a peculiar stink’. Using the phrase ‘Imagine the Smell’ is considered as a racist comment in western countries.

4. The statement by Pash drew strong reactions as it was considered to be racist and insulting. Many people linked this  comment to his racist bias. The comment was made not by a common media user but by a senior officer of the AI Department, increasing the seriousness of the matter because of which there was pressure on the company to take action.

Refusal to offer apology  

Nik Pash refused to offer an apology even after the criticism. He claimed it was a light joke and also refused to remove the post. The Chief Executive Officer Saoud Rizwan initially tried to protect Pash, stating that the statements made in a crowded programme were taken out of context. Later however, the company clarified that refusal to apologise is against the principles of the company and on that basis, Pash was dismissed from his post.
