Why is the need for a museum ?
During the Portuguese regime, Goa underwent a significant change in social, cultural and
political fields. Portuguese oppressed Goans for the propagation of their religion;
suppressed the traditions followed by Goans; forced Goans to forget their culture and
grabbed lands owned by the Goans. Goans opposed the Portuguese; but this history has not
been brought forth in a correct manner. It is, therefore, necessary to have a museum where
true history will be presented and it will help the educational, cultural and research
institutes.

The process of setting up a museum
1. To make documentation based on the facts of the Portuguese colonialism
2. To record historical proofs, literature, history passed on verbally and experiences of local
witnesses
3. To underline the fight given by the people of Goa for the protection of Indian culture
4. To build an educational and research centre for students and researchers
5. To present history through multimedia, short films etc using modern technology
6. To offer a common platform to the national and international scholars to work together
on this issue
A digital collection of the history of Goa will be built up at international level with the help
of modern technology. Before setting up of the museum, a committee should be set up
comprising of historians, researchers, cultural experts, people of Goa and the State archives
and directorate of archaeology. Help of Goa State Museum, the Indian Council of Historical
Research and other cultural organisations may be sought for setting up this museum.
Importance of such a museum
This museum will help in preserving the truth for future generations. It will also strengthen
the cultural roots of Goa with Indian cultural traditions. This museum will help Goa to lead
in the fields of study of freedom from colonialism and preservation of culture in India.
