Cueto (Ecuador) – South American country Ecuador’s President  Daniel Noboa’s vehicle was attacked by more than 500 civilians. The attackers pelted stones at the President’s convoy and opened fire on his convoy. Noboa was unharmed. 5 individuals have been arrested in this case. The presidential office announced that all suspects will face charges of terrorism and attempted assassination.

Reason behind the attack

President Noboa’s decree eliminating fuel subsidies, signed recently, has been one of his government’s most contentious economic measures. The indigenous groups and small farmers are on the streets to protest; they have called for nationwide shut- down for last two weeks. Officials argue the reform will save the state about $1.1 billion annually, funds that are being redirected towards compensation schemes for small farmers and transport workers.  Indigenous groups and small farmers protest the government’s decision to scrap diesel subsidies, as they think they will be the worst affected, while for the rich and big industrialists, the repercussions are minimal. The government has declared state of emergency in several regions to control violent demonstrations
